Frequently Asked Questions about ZORB-IT™

How
does Zorb-It™ work?
Zorb-It™ is a proprietary granular formulation
which is designed to control relative humidity and ambient moisture
for the protection of your valuable and prized possessions. Relative
Humidity changes almost constantly on a daily cycle. This
daily cycle is caused by changes in temperature and weather conditions,
even in "climate controlled" environments. Zorb-It™ works
by absorbing humidity and moisture from the air surrounding the
packets as the humidity increases. As the humidity decreases
through the daily cycle, it will work to release just enough
moisture to stabilize the enclosed environment at the long-term
average relative humidity level. Zorb-It™ will then
hold the environment at this average, reducing the humidity and
stabilizing it near a constant value. This stabilizing
action is the key preservative factor for your prized possessions
and valuable instruments because, especially with electronics
and metals, as the relative humidity records a linear increase,
the potential for corrosion increases exponentially.
Zorb-It™ and Zorb-It Ci™ are products which have been
used and proven effective for more than a decade in the toughest
industrial environments around the world, from equatorial Malaysia
to the colder northern reaches of Canada.

How
does Zorb-It CiT work?
Please refer to the previous question,
just above. Zorb-It Ci™ works in exactly
the same way as Zorb-It but then adds a third
unique chemistry to the process of controlling
relative humidity and maintaining it at the daily average. "Ci" stands
for Corrosion Inhibitor. The proprietary "Ci" element passes
through the packet membrane and introduces into
the environment corrosion inhibiting molecules
which attach to metal surfaces with a micro-thin
coating. The environmental electrochemical
process of corrosion is then retarded. These
molecules are completely safe for metal products
and surfaces and cannot be felt with your
hands. There is none of the greasiness
sometimes associated with anti-corrosion products. It
is non-toxic but, of course, should not
be eaten or ingested in any way.

How
often do I need to change the packets?
This is our favorite question and the one which is
the easiest to answer. The answer is, never! Zorb-It's
action continues indefinitely, perpetually, with no reduction
of its humidity and moisture controlling action. The
packs themselves may experience wear or deteriorate, depending
on how they are handled and used. If the packets are
abraded, torn, or broken open, they should be replaced. Zorb-It
Ci™ needs replacing about every 7-10 years. The "Ci" factor
depletes even as the Zorb-It™ elements continue to work
hard for you.

Where
do I install the packets in the enclosure, such as a box,
gun, instrument, or camera case, or any other enclosed environment?
Just open the sealed bags containing the packets of
Zorb-It™ and introduce them into your camera bag, gun case
or gun safe, storage boxes, or other enclosed spaces. It
starts working immediately. Ideally, the packets should
be placed where air can circulate around them, but this
is not critical for its humidity and ambient moisture controlling
action to be effective.

When
I open my enclosure (such as a camera bag, gun safe, or instrument case)
and feel the Zorb-It packet, it feels hard (or soft or putty-like)?
A change in the consistency, or "feel," of
the material inside of the Zorb-It™ packets is one of the
more obvious signs that Zorb-It™ is working hard for you. Depending
on its saturation and where it is in the long-term average relative
humidity cycle, its "feel" can change. The range
is from a granular consistency to a putty-like pliability to
a feeling of being rather hard. Zorb-It™ is a dynamic
product which is working all the time. Its consistency
varies normally among these forms and descriptions.

What
is relative humidity?
Relative Humidity, or RH, is a term that indicates the ratio
of moisture in the air compared to the moisture capacity of the
air at a given temperature. It is always expressed as a
percentage and is also referred to as %RH.
